The process of research, understanding program and client aspirations, learning site constraints and opportunities, is an exhilarating process. Usually during or shortly after gathering this body of knowledge or series thereof, the inspiration occurs: giving way to a tidal wave of adventure that usually spans the next year or three to realize a building, and a piece of architecture. Though faith in the outcome is not always immediate, it is essential and grows as the object comets to life.
Michael graduated in 1984 from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Architecture. Apprenticeship began in the collaborative environment of Irving Boigon office in Richmond Hill. Through subsequent opportunity with Brian Garratt and Terry Marklevitz, Michael obtained a diverse architectural background with institutional and commercial work. Terry became a leader in educational work and was mentor to Michael on numerous historical restorative and adaptive use projects.
Setting up his own practice in 1993, Michael enjoyed the collaboration and close working relationship with Joseph Kokot, at that time an architect apprentice from Poland. Together, Michael and Joseph shared their passion for the next 15 years, including numerous private sector projects, international competitions and work for the Walter Fedy Partnership. Joseph Kokot is now a senior designer with the WFP.
In 2009, coming from Isreal (formally Moscow), Rita Osypa Fishman joined Michael’s practice to learn the constraints of the Canadian climate and learn how to build. Their work together grew in intensity and diversity over the next decade, breaking new territory in the world of sustainable technologies. Rita recently accepted a position as senior designer and N45 in Ottawa.
